Sedation Dentistry

We know that dentist visits are not the most exciting experience, but many patients also feel deep dental anxiety. This can turn a routine visit into a time of stress and discomfort. We offer sedation dentistry with this in mind, promoting a peaceful visit even for patients with significant dental anxiety. At TruGLO Modern Dental, our La Jolla office offers safe, effective sedation options for a calm, smooth, and anxiety-free visit.

A Stress-Free Dental Experience Is Within Reach

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry involves professionally administered medication to help patients feel relaxed during dental procedures. The sedation involved can range from mild relaxants to stronger sedatives. Lighter options simply reduce stress, while deeper sedatives allow you to remain conscious and responsive but largely unaware of the procedure. The right approach always starts with safety and your needs as a patient.
We often recommend sedation dentistry for patients experiencing:
  • Dental anxiety or phobia
  • A strong gag reflex
  • Difficulty sitting still for long appointments
  • Sensitivity to pain or discomfort
  • The need for multiple or complex procedures

Why Choose Our La Jolla Practice for Sedation Dentistry

  • Personalized sedation tailored to your comfort level

Types of Sedation We Offer

Administered via IV into the bloodstream for deeper sedation. Ideal for extensive procedures or severe dental anxiety.

Sedation Dentistry FAQs

Is sedation dentistry safe?
Yes, sedation dentistry is very safe when administered by trained professionals. We only ever have fully trained staff involved in sedation dentistry. Furthermore, we carefully review your health history and monitor you throughout your visit to enhance safety..
Costs vary depending on the type of sedation used and the length of your procedure. During your consultation, we provide clear pricing and discuss any applicable membership plan discounts through our TruGLO Membership options. Depending on your plan, you may qualify for discounts for all sedation options. Our plans also provide benefits for free preventive care, such as cleanings, X-rays, and exams.
Most forms of sedation keep you awake but deeply relaxed. With IV sedation, you are conscious but in a less aware state. Think of it like the state halfway between waking and sleeping. While technically conscious, many patients remember little to nothing about the procedure, and it passes in a flash.
Some options wear off fast enough for you to safely drive afterward. But it depends on the type and strength of sedation.<
  • Nitrous oxide wears off rapidly and allows you to drive yourself home.<
  • Oral and IV sedation require a responsible adult to accompany you, as lingering effects can impair driving.<
Effects vary by method. Nitrous oxide wears off within minutes once we stop administering it. Oral and IV sedation may take several hours to fully subside. During this time, avoid operating heavy machinery (cars included) and engaging in any activities that pose a physical risk.
Sedation is common for major procedures (e.g., wisdom teeth removal), but it is not exclusive to them. Dental anxiety can happen even for routine visits or exams. If you have any factors that contribute to a difficult dental visit, sedation dentistry can be an option.
